Viral squishy fidget toys drove a jump in product searches on ASI's ESP platform in the third quarter, according to ASI Research. Searches for "dumpling," linked to blind-box glitter dumpling toys, rose 184% from Q2, and "hacky sack" climbed more than 1,200%.
Seasonal terms also rose as buyers planned for winter: searches for beanies, ornaments and scarves more than doubled from Q2, and hand warmers gained 40%. Staples such as pens, tote bags, water bottles and tumblers kept the top spots, with backpacks and mugs returning to the top 10.
Searches for Stanley tumblers fell 40% from a year earlier; in promo the brand is now sold only through PCNA and its ETS Express unit. ASI also noted that the CPSC has recalled several squishy-toy brands over water-bead hazards, a point for buyers sourcing look-alike products.
